Our Purpose and Vision

The Nicholas J. and Pegge Begich Public Service Fund (formerly the Nick Begich Scholarship Intern Fund) is dedicated to carrying on the ideals of the late Congressman Nicholas J. Begich (D-Alaska), who passed away in 1972 while campaigning for reelection to the United States House of Representatives. Nick’s widow, Pegge Begich, his dedicated Chief of Staff, Gene Kennedy, and a number of friends created the fund in 1977 in memory of that work and his dedication to his two careers – Education and Public Service. Building Alaska’s next generation of leadership has been the driving force of the Fund since then.
Since its inception nearly 500 Alaskans have received funds to support their postsecondary education. Many of these students have become leaders and educators in their community, some have been elected to public service, others are making a difference in many fields that have a direct impact on the lives of those who live and work throughout Alaska.
The Fund partners with other organizations to support youth-serving and educational activities, and supports many past recipients in achieving their goals as educators, pubic servants, and citizens. Always seeking to strengthen Alaska’s potential by investing in its future, the Fund is dedicated to Alaska and its people.
